What are the costs of joining a sorority?
The registration fee for Formal Recruitment is $75 (July 22nd deadline) or $125 (August 5th deadline). It is due when you submit your application form online.
The costs associated with the individual chapters after joining vary from sorority to sorority. We highly encourage potential new members to ask about financial costs of each chapter during the first round of Recruitment. It is a very common topic of conversation, and should not be an awkward question.
The average (these are only averages, some may be higher or lower) dues for each semester are as follows:
- First semester average: $1700 - includes sorority house meal plan, one-time national fees, pledging, initiation, house dues, social dues, etc.
- Subsequent semesters average: $1500 - includes sorority house meal plan, house dues, social dues, etc.
- Most sororities require members to live in the house at some point. Rent, per semester, averages $1200.
- Freshmen: once you join a sorority, the Dining Services Office will be notified and you will automatically have your university meal plan reduced to the "Greek Plan." You will pay the Greek Plan to MSU and the sorority house meal plan to the sorority. The total of both of these meal plans will not exceed the meal plan cost for non-Greek freshmen.
