What is a recommendation letter?
If you are considering participating in Formal Recruitment this fall, it is important to start thinking about letters of recommendation. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of each sorority to obtain a recommendation for you. However, if you can provide these “recs” for the sorority, you will maximize your own success with the recruitment process.
A letter of recommendation should be provided by an alumna of a sorority. This woman may have joined her sorority at MSU or at any other college or university in the country. Ask your teachers, guidance counselors, church friends, mothers of your friends, etc., to see who you know but may not realize are Greek.
Each national sorority organization has its own recommendation form. The alum can obtain this recommendation form by going to the sorority’s national website and printing it off. Typically, it is a good idea to submit a copy of your transcript, your resume, and a picture when asking someone to write a letter for you. The recommendation should then be sent directly to the sorority here at MSU. The addresses are provided below.
You only need to try and get one rec per sorority. If you have more than one for a given group, that is fine but not necessary. Some hometowns have alumni groups who will assist you with this process. For further assistance locating an alum in your area, you may also contact the national office for the sorority (info may be found online).
Potential new members (that is you!) and parents should never contact sororities directly via mail, phone, text, or social networking, etc. The only contact concerning recommendations should be between the sorority and the alum who is preparing the rec.
August 1st is generally the deadline we recommend for completing this part of the process. However, sororities receive recommendations all the way through recruitment week.
